Dakota Residence

SITE: The Dakota, which was built in the late 19th century, is the oldest remaining luxury apartment in New York City. The residential quarters have a complex arrangement with more than one entrance for guests and services, and views on to interior courtyards and exterior gardens. The building is designated a city landmark by the New York City Landmarks Preservation Commission.

BRIEF: The project required a careful study of historic architectural characteristics that were to be preserved while updating the communal areas of kitchen, dining, and family room, and the addition of new program spaces for the growing family.

DESIGN: The renovation is a highly detailed project. Original materials, such as encaustic tile in period colors imported from the United Kingdom, were pieced together to create a custom flooring pattern in the kitchen. Cabinetry features with clear and patterned glass, classical 19th century architectural mouldings, a central island and complementary appliances complete the room.
